Tillotson Enterprises Reduces Risk and Adds Value

Picking a contractor is not easy. Just because a contractor has been in business for a long time or is the lowest bid doesn’t necessarily make them the best. Below is a list of things that the average person may not consider when picking the right contractor. Make certain foam thickness in the contract is what you get. Rule of thumb if you don’t see the foam crew probing the foam you are not getting the foam thickness you pay for. One inch is minimum foam thickness over smooth surface. Since foam thicknesses will very ¼ from high’s to low to get one inch everywhere you need at least 1 ¼ inch thick foam spec because foam should not be shot at less than ½ inch per passes. Along the same lines 1 ½ is minimum over an irregular surface and 2-3 inches is needed to stop condensation.

Warranties: Watch long material warranties and read the fine print.
Workman’s Comp: Make sure that they have it. You can check this out for yourself.
Materials: Just because it is white does not make all coatings the same?
Workers: How long have they been doing this kind of work?
Education: Does some one on the crew had any advanced training?
Past Work: Do they have a performance line?
References: Call some people that they have worked for.

In summary, you want to consider more than just price when choosing the contractor to do your work. Some of the items on this list may seem insignificant, but are important and can save you money in the long run.

Contracts

Contracts that are written with vague language are poor contracts. Example: “spray apply elastomeric top coat to roof.” This contract doesn’t mention what type of material is being used, what rate, and what is the ending thickness of the material. Watch out for contractors using brochures from one manufacturer and using materials from a different manufacturer.

Contractor Material warranties

Material warranty usually cover only defects from the manufacturer. Most people assume the material warranty covers problems with the materials even if the materials weren’t applied correctly by the contractor.
