Why Does Conklin Use Poly Alpha Olefins (PAOs) as a Base Oil in Convoy®?Greater Oxidative StabilityPAOs offer increased stability in the presence of oxygen and greater resistance to oxidation. PAOs are used in lubricants and other applications where the resistance to oxidation and the response to additives are important. This is especially true in applications, including automotive, compressor or other industrial lubricants, where extended drain intervals require the base oil to be more stable in the presence of oxygen. These superior qualities are a result of PAOs being free of impurities, unlike conventional mineral oils with heterocyclic and sulfur-containing molecules that compete with antioxidants to reduce the overall oxidative stability. PAOs are traditionally known and used for their “problem solving” abilities. That’s because poly alpha olefins are impurity-free and contain only well-defined hydrocarbon molecules with specific performance properties. PAOs are made from an intentional process for targeted performance properties. ![]() Reduced Volatility One of the key benefits of PAOs is that their lower volatility means there is less oil loss in high-temperature conditions. This results in lower oil consumption and fewer emissions, two valuable benefits in many applications. PAOs are also ideally suited for applications with lower oil sump volumes or high operating temperatures. ![]() Low-Temperature Fluidity The excellent low-temperature properties of PAOs provide increased protection and fluidity. PAOs offer both low pour points and low viscosity properties that make cold-weather starting easier by reducing strain on engine parts, batteries and starter motors. During engine start-up, lower viscosities allow the lubricant to flow and lubricate the necessary parts of an engine. ![]() High Viscosity Index PAOs have inherently high viscosity indexes (VI) while maintaining excellent low-temperature performance. Both properties are critical in protecting engines at temperature extremes. Low temperatures can rob a lubricant of its ability to reach critical parts, while high temperatures can thin and break down engine oil, crippling its lubricating ability. Because PAOs are synthesized molecules, they don’t contain components that might adversely affect their desired properties. As a result, PAOs require fewer viscosity index (VI) improvers and are less likely to create performance-limiting deposits. |
“Convoy motor oil is the foundation of my Vehicle Maintenance formula. I’ve been using Conklin Vehicle Products exclusively since I bought my Suburban in 1994. With over 569,000 miles (1/08), it still runs and looks like new. From motor oils and fuel conditioners to appearance products, I count on the longevity Conklin products provide.”
